What is a York Regional Councillor?

I am running as a candidate for York Regional Councillor for the City of Markham. As an elected Regional Councillor for Markham, I will have have responsibilities to both the City of Markham and the York Regional Council.

On October 22, 2018, Markham voters will cast their ballots for up to 4 candidates for regional council. The four candidates with the most votes, along with the elected Mayor of Markham, will become City of Markham representatives on the York Regional Council.

Your regional councillors are responsible for the long-term strategy and day-to-day decision making for matters that affect the entire Region of York. Some of the things that regional councillors are involved in include:

  • Regional Parks and green spaces (e.g. York Regional Forest, Bruce Mills)
  • Police and Paramedic Services
  • Public Health Promotion and Services
  • Public Transportation (YRT, Viva)
  • Regional Roads (Highway 48, Highway 7)

Your city councillors are responsible for visioning and executing the plan for the City of Markham. Some of the things that city councillors are involved in include:

  • City Parks and green spaces (e.g. Raymerville Woodlot, Toogood Pond)
  • Fire Services
  • Residential, Commercial, and Industrial land zoning and overall city planning
  • Waste Management
  • Recreation Centres and Libraries
