We Deserve True Transparency Between Our Councillors and Professional Lobbyists
Professional lobbyists may provide information to councillors to aid in decision making, but let’s be clear: they’re lobbying for a corporation or a cause. Lobbyists are inherently biased, and when they have unfettered and unrestricted access to our councillors, residents rightfully start assuming the worse.
Who are our councillors talking to?
Do the people who lobby our government receiving bonuses when developments are approved?
How many people lobby our councillors?
The answer to the above questions, and more questions like those, is we don’t know. We don’t know because we are not being anywhere near transparent enough to separate facts from fiction.
We need to restore trust and integrity to city hall, and we that’s why we need a real Markham Lobbyist Registry. A strong lobbyist registry that:
- Tracks all interactions between lobbyists and our elected officials
- Clearly lays out a code of conduct for all lobbyists, including rules around gifts, and bonuses
Cities like Toronto, Ottawa, Hamilton, Brampton, and Vaughan already have registries in place. Let’s catch up and be one of the most transparent cities in Ontario.
Do you think it’s time for our elected officials to be fully transparent with their interactions with lobbyists? If so, then I ask for your support in Markham Votes 2018!
